DSL SERVICE

DSL - Digital Subscriber Line

DSL Explained

A Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) runs over the twisted pair of copper lines traditionally used for basic telephone service. Norstar places and configures a router on your premises. The router establishes the meeting point between the DSL line and your computer network (LAN). When you transmit data from your desktop PC to the Internet, it is the router that directs the data to pass over the DSL phone line to the nearby Central Office of your local telephone company.

At the Central Office Norstar connects the DSL line to an access device called a Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexor (DSLAM). Here your data is transmitted to our network and upstream to the Internet.

The DSL technology has some limitations. Not all locations qualify for it, the distance between the location and the CO should be less than approx. 18,000 feet (and even this is not a guarantee). Our network of available Central Offices is huge and growing. Call us if you want and see if DSL is for you.

Norstar has software that can be used to instantly see if your address qualifies and the estimated speed. There are no charges associated with line qualifications, so call us to see if you can get this great service

Norstar now offers DSL via "line share" which means that instead of having a separate line for DSL and another line for your phone, the same line (your phone line) is used for both voice and data at the same time. It is possible, because DSL uses frequencies higher than 25KHz (the regular phone usually uses frequencies up to 4 KHz, people can hear sounds between 20 Hz and 20 KHz, so there is no interference). With "Line Share" you install so-called "splitter" or "filter" on your line (a small box) which separates data from voice.

Using it is easy - after modem installation you connect your computer to the DSL modem using Ethernet network interface. The only thing you need to have is a network (Ethernet) card in your PC. To configure your PC to work with DSL select "Connect using LAN" in Internet Explorer. The connection is "always on" and you can go online any time you want without waiting for the connection to get established.

Prices start at $29.00 a month. Now you can have a faster, always on, reliable connection, which does not interfere with your phone line.
